Sharks and Minnows Leadership Program

If you are considering a career in recreation or becoming a lifeguard, this program is an excellent investment in your future!

Program Description:  The Sharks/Minnows program is designed to give teens and young adults the opportunity to experience the challenges and benefits of working in aquatics. The program includes a training session that consists of instruction, shadow guarding, and special event planning.  In addition, participants gain practical experience in all of these areas.  Once the training session is completed, the participant will be given the opportunity to volunteer during our swimming lessons, public swims, special events and staff in-services.  Interested candidates need to fill out the attached application form and return it to the front desk of Douglas Recreation Centre (20550 Douglas Crescent) or Al Anderson Memorial Pool (4949 207th Street).  All applicants will be contacted regarding the date of the first orientation session. A parent information session will be held on June 21st from 6:00pm-8:30pm and it is recommended that parents attend in order to understand the expectations and commitment requirements of this program.  At the end of the season, Sharks and Minnows will receive a letter of appreciation from the supervisor of the program along with a record of the hours they spent volunteering.


Each Shark must be 14 years of age or older and Minnows must be 12 to 13 years of age. They must have fully completed the Red Cross Swim Kids program (Level 10) and have proof of their completion. Each Shark applicant needs to be available to volunteer for one lesson set, one leadership set and one special event. The leadership and lesson participation must be in the same set. Unless unable to participate and then arrangement can be made for the individual to join the leadership portion. A Shark or Minnows can volunteer for as many special events as they want. Each Shark can only participate for three years to allow space for new Sharks to join.

Cost:                      SHARKS: $60.00 (60 Hours of Leadership and Lifeguard Training + Volunteer Hours)

                              MINNOWS: $50.00 (30 Hours of Leadership and Lifeguard Training + Volunteer Hours)


*Each Sharks and Minnows will receive a Manual, T-Shirt, and a 15% discount on all Advanced Aquatic registration (cannot be combined with other promotional discount and not for WSI) a participation letter at the end of the pool season with the number of volunteer hours will be provided as well.
