Langley, BC – Eating healthy is often easier said than done; however the City of Langley is making it simpler than ever with its Live 5-2-1-0 program. As part of its commitment to a healthier community, the City is reminding residents to eat right and exercise while providing new facilities to make a healthy lifestyle accessible to everyone.

“The 5-2-1-0 principle provides residents with the tools and ideas to improve health and quality of life for their children and themselves,” said Langley City Mayor Ted Shaffer. “Advice on proper nutrition and physical activity can be confusing, and at times overwhelming. Live 5-2-1-0 simplifies this into a straightforward recipe for healthy living.”

Based on recent research, the Live 5-2-1-0 program follows four simple guidelines that are easy to remember:

  • 5 - Enjoy - five fruits and vegetables every day.
  • 2 - Power Down - no more than Two hours of screen time daily.
  • 1 - Play Actively - at least One hour each day.
  • 0 - Choose Healthy - Zero sugar-sweetened drinks.

“Regardless of whether you’re a doctor or a parent, a cyclist or a skateboarder, everyone is an important part of building a healthier community,” said Christine Daum, Recreation Supervisor at the City of Langley. “The 5-2-1-0 initiative is important as it reminds everyone that they make a choice when it comes to their own health. Hopefully that choice will be to get active, whether it’s joining a soccer team or registering for a membership at the Timms Community Centre.”

The new Timms Community Centre will offer exciting new amenities, including a gymnasium, running/walking track, weight room, fitness room, spin room, games room and multipurpose rooms. The grand opening for Timms takes place on February 24th between 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Langley City’s accredited fitness staff will also be on hand to provide training tips and guidance on how to properly use the equipment.
